Infidelity Test: 7 Crucial Questions to Find Out If You Are Being Cheated On

Updated: 2 days ago

When suspicion sets in, thoughts go round in circles: one night everything seems obvious, the next morning it seems an exaggeration. This infidelity test will not tell you whether you are being cheated on — no test can. What it does is make you answer seven specific questions with a yes or a no, so that you can look at the situation more clearly. The questions come from the patterns we see most often in the infidelity investigations we handle in Portugal.
Quick answer: how does the infidelity test work?
Answer «yes» or «no» to seven questions about the phone, schedules, reactions, emotional distance, appearance, money and new people. Count as «yes» only what is a clear change from what was normal and has lasted several weeks. One or two yes answers rarely mean anything; three or four deserve attention; five or more justify trying to clarify the situation. In no case is the result proof.
Before you start: two rules
Answer about changes, not personality. If the person has always been private about their phone, that doesn't count. What counts is what has changed.
Answer about facts, not feelings. «Came home after 9 pm four times this month» is a fact. «Has been acting strange» is not.
Infidelity test: the 7 questions
1. Does your partner take their phone everywhere, including the bathroom?
Screen face down, a new passcode, hidden notifications, the phone that is no longer left charging in the living room. It is the sign most often reported by people who come to us. Alternative explanation: work involving confidential information, a surprise being planned or simple habit. We go deeper into this in our guide on how to find out about cheating on WhatsApp.
2. Have schedules changed, with explanations that don't add up?
Overtime that never shows on the payslip, meetings that run on, new workouts, more frequent trips. Notice above all whether the explanations are vague or change from one telling to the next. Alternative explanation: a genuinely busier period at work, which is usually easy to confirm.
When the explanations are always professional, read about cheating at work.
3. Are simple questions now taken as attacks?
«Where have you been?» causes irritation, a change of subject or the blame being turned around. This is instant defensiveness, which we describe in our article on how a man behaves when he is cheating. Alternative explanation: the person feels watched and is reacting to that, not to guilt.
4. Do you feel an emotional distance that wasn't there before?
Less conversation, less interest in your day, plans for two postponed, the feeling of talking to someone who is absent. It is often the first sign, as we explain in our article on how a woman behaves when she is cheating. Alternative explanation: tiredness, depression or the wear and tear of the relationship itself.
5. Is there a new concern with appearance that isn't for your time together?
The gym, new clothes, a different perfume, more attention to their looks on days out. Alternative explanation: a phase of self-esteem or a personal goal — which is normally shared with you.
6. Are there expenses or movements of money you can't explain?
Cash withdrawals, payments at restaurants or hotels, an account or card you didn't know about. Money is often the most objective trail. Alternative explanation: a debt, a problem the person is ashamed to mention or a gift.
7. Is there a new name that comes up too often — or has stopped coming up?
A colleague, someone from the gym, a recent friendship of which you only know a first name. Or, on the contrary, a name that used to be routine and has suddenly vanished from conversation. Alternative explanation: an ordinary friendship, no longer mentioned precisely because your suspicion has been noticed.
How to interpret your answers
0 to 2 «yes» answers
Isolated signs rarely mean infidelity. It is more worthwhile to ask what is feeding the suspicion: insecurity, a past experience, or a real distance that deserves a conversation.
If this is your situation, read what to do when you sense there is someone else.
3 to 4 «yes» answers
There is a pattern that deserves attention, but it is still compatible with other explanations. This is the time to record facts for a few weeks and have a calm conversation.
5 to 7 «yes» answers
Several signs at once, sustained over time, are rarely coincidence. It does not prove infidelity, but it justifies trying to clarify the situation rather than continuing to live in doubt. See the full description of each behaviour in the 10 silent signs of cheating.
If you have already found something, read the 3 essential steps before you confront.
The question the test doesn't ask: what if the answer is something else?
The same behaviours appear in someone going through burnout, a health problem, financial difficulty or a personal crisis they haven't yet managed to share. A high score tells you that something has changed; it does not tell you what. That is why the next step should never be an accusation.
What you should not do with the result
Look at your partner's phone, email or social media. It may be a criminal offence in Portugal, even between spouses, and evidence obtained this way may have no value.
Install spy apps or trackers. For the same reasons.
Confront without facts. It usually only makes the person more careful.
Retake the test every day. It feeds anxiety and adds no information.
What to do next
1. Record facts for two to three weeks
Dates, times and specific situations. If the pattern holds up on paper, you have a basis; if it doesn't, you have an answer.
2. Talk about what you have observed
At a calm moment, describe what you have seen and how you feel, without accusing.
3. Find out about your rights
If marriage, children or assets are involved, a conversation with a lawyer helps you decide with confidence. We have put together a list of the best family law attorneys in Portugal.
If you are already thinking about divorce, see which proof of infidelity has legal value in Portugal.
4. Ask for professional confirmation
When the doubt persists, an infidelity investigation confirms or rules out the suspicion with facts. It begins with a free and confidential initial assessment and a fixed quote with no hidden costs — learn more about how much a private investigator costs in Portugal. Surveillance is carried out in public places, within the law, and ends with a written report with photographs and video. All investigations are coordinated by detective Alexandre Ribeiro, a member of WAD (no. 1687), APDPE (no. 1326), LIDEPPE (member no. 33) and IKD.
Frequently asked questions about the infidelity test
What is an infidelity test?
It is a set of reflection questions that helps you organise what you have been observing in your relationship and separate facts from fears. It is not a diagnosis and does not prove infidelity.
Is an infidelity test reliable?
It is reliable for structuring your thinking, not for giving certainty. The same behaviours can have other causes, such as stress, health problems or financial difficulties. Only verified facts confirm a suspicion.
How many «yes» answers mean I am being cheated on?
No number guarantees infidelity. One or two yes answers rarely justify alarm; five or more, sustained over months, justify trying to clarify the situation.
What should I do after the test?
Record specific facts, choose a calm moment to talk and, if the doubt persists, seek advice from a family lawyer or a professional investigation.
Should I confront my partner with the result?
Not with the result, but with what you have observed and how you feel. An accusation without facts tends to shut down the conversation and make the person more careful.
Can I confirm the answers by looking at my partner's phone?
You should not. Accessing another person's phone or accounts without permission may be a criminal offence in Portugal, even between spouses, and evidence obtained this way may have no value.
