Your Gut Feeling Isn't Lying: What to Do When You Sense There Is Someone Else

Updated: 2 days ago

You haven't found a message. You haven't seen anything. You don't have a single piece of proof you could show anyone. And yet you know something has changed. If that is how you feel, you are not alone, and you are not exaggerating: this is exactly where most of the people who come to us start. This article will not tell you whether there is someone else. It will help you understand what your intuition is picking up, cope with the weight of uncertainty and decide what to do — including when it makes sense to turn to an infidelity investigation.
Quick answer: what should you do when you sense there is someone else?
Take the feeling seriously, but don't treat it as proof. Intuition is usually right that something has changed and more often wrong about why. Move from feelings to facts by recording what you observe for a few weeks; talk to your partner about the distance you feel, without accusing; don't monitor their phone or try to obtain proof yourself; and look after yourself while the doubt lasts. If, after that, the uncertainty still fills your days, a professional investigation is a legal and discreet way to settle it.
Your gut feeling isn't lying — but it doesn't tell you everything
Intuition is not magic. It is the sum of dozens of small observations your brain registers without you noticing: a different tone of voice, a glance that looks away, a routine that has shifted by ten minutes. You have known this person for years; it is natural to notice when something doesn't add up. In that sense, intuition rarely lies: when you feel something has changed, it almost always has.
What intuition cannot do is tell you what. The same distance can come from a parallel relationship, a problem at work, a health worry, a hidden debt or a sadness the person can't yet explain. That is why the next step should never be a conclusion — it should be a question.
What your intuition may be picking up
Small changes in routine
Leaving a little earlier, arriving a little later, the phone no longer left on the table. None of these things means anything on its own. Together, they create the feeling that the pieces no longer fit.
Attention that has changed direction
Present, but somewhere else. Hearing you without listening, laughing less with you and more at the screen. Emotional distance is often the first sign people feel, as we explain in our article on how a woman behaves when she is cheating — and it happens just as much with men.
Small inconsistencies
A story told two ways, a detail that doesn't match, an answer that comes too quickly. Not enough to accuse anyone, but enough to leave you thinking.
What has stopped happening
Sometimes the sign is an absence: the mid-day message, the plan for the weekend, the touch in passing. We bring the most frequent behaviours together in the 10 silent signs of cheating.
The weight of prolonged uncertainty
Anyone who has never been through this underestimates it. For many people, not knowing is harder than knowing. Doubt fills the nights, steals your concentration at work and turns every late arrival into a riddle. You catch yourself watching, comparing versions, rehearsing conversations. And on top of it all, you feel guilty for doubting someone you care about.
None of this means you are losing your mind or that you are a jealous person. It means you have been on alert for too long. If anxiety is already affecting your sleep, appetite or work, speak to your GP or a psychologist: you deserve support, whatever the answer turns out to be.
Three traps to avoid
Monitoring. Looking at your partner's phone, email or social media may be a criminal offence in Portugal, even between spouses, and rarely brings peace: every answer creates a new doubt. We explain why in our guide on how to find out about cheating on WhatsApp.
Accusing without facts. If you are wrong, you hurt someone who doesn't deserve it; if you are right, you give them time to hide everything.
Staying silent for years. Doubt that is never settled does not go away: it settles in and wears the relationship down from the inside, whether or not there is someone else.
What to do, step by step
1. Put a name to what you feel
Write down, for yourself, what has changed and since when. Putting the feeling into words takes away some of its weight and shows you whether you are facing a fact or a fear.
2. Move from feelings to facts
For two or three weeks, note only what is observable: times, absences, specific changes. To structure your thinking, you can take the 7-question infidelity test.
3. Talk about the distance, not the suspicion
«I feel we've drifted apart and it worries me» is a sentence that can be answered. It gives the other person the chance to tell you what is going on, whatever it is.
4. Look after yourself
Sleep, eat, keep your routines and talk to someone you trust. Decisions made in exhaustion are rarely good decisions.
5. Decide whether you need to know
Some people can live with doubt and some cannot. Neither is a weakness. If the uncertainty is consuming you, you have every right to look for an answer.
Investigating is not revenge: it is putting an end to doubt
Many people hesitate to contact a detective because they feel it is disloyal or vindictive. In our experience, the people who come to us almost never want to punish anyone. They want to stop living in suspense. An investigation has two possible outcomes, and both bring relief: either it confirms what you feared and lets you decide with your eyes open, or it shows there is nobody else and lets you lower your guard and look at the other causes of the distance.
It is not the only path. An honest conversation or couples therapy resolves many of these situations, and they are worth trying first. An investigation makes sense when the conversation hasn't clarified things, when the explanations don't add up or when you need facts to make a decision that affects your life.
How it works, discreetly
It begins with a free and confidential initial assessment. You don't need proof to call us: just tell us what you feel and what has changed, and we will tell you frankly whether there are grounds to investigate — sometimes the answer is not yet. If you go ahead, we present a fixed quote with no hidden costs; learn more about how much a private investigator costs in Portugal. Surveillance is carried out in public places, within the law, with no access to phones or communications, and ends with a written report with photographs and video. To organise the fieldwork we normally need 24 hours' notice. All investigations are coordinated by detective Alexandre Ribeiro, a member of WAD (no. 1687), APDPE (no. 1326), LIDEPPE (member no. 33) and IKD.
Frequently asked questions about a gut feeling of cheating
Is a gut feeling about cheating usually right?
A gut feeling is usually right that something has changed, because it comes from many small signs you register without noticing. It is more often wrong about the cause: the change may be due to someone else, but also to stress, a health problem or a personal crisis.
How do I tell intuition from jealousy or insecurity?
Intuition comes from specific, recent changes in the other person's behaviour. Jealousy and insecurity tend to exist regardless of what the other person does and to repeat from one relationship to the next. Moving from feelings to facts helps you see which of the two you are experiencing.
Should I confront my partner based on a feeling alone?
It is better to talk about the distance you feel than to make an accusation. A calm conversation about what has changed opens the way to an explanation; an accusation without facts tends to close it.
Is it normal to feel guilty for being suspicious?
It is very common. People who are suspicious often feel they are betraying the other person's trust just by having the doubt. Feeling the doubt is not a failing; what matters is what you do with it.
Does it make sense to hire a detective with no proof at all?
Yes, it is the most common situation. Most people who contact us have no proof, only the perception that something has changed. The initial assessment exists precisely to work out whether there are grounds to investigate.
What if the investigation finds nothing?
That is an answer too, and often the one most hoped for. Knowing there is nobody else lets you stop living on alert and look at the other possible causes of the distance.
Would you like to talk to someone, with no commitment?
Talking to us is confidential and commits you to nothing. We work throughout the country, including Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve. Call or send a WhatsApp message to +351 936 225 975, 24 hours a day, or learn more about our infidelity investigation service.
