How to Find Out Who Owns a Car from Its Number Plate in Portugal

A car abandoned outside your home for weeks. A scratch on the door and a number plate jotted down in a hurry. A car you sold two years ago that keeps bringing you fines. A debtor who claims to own nothing but always turns up in a new car. In all these situations the question is the same: how do you find out who owns a car from its number plate? In this guide we explain when it makes sense to identify a vehicle's owner, why the name alone does not always solve the problem and how we handle these cases in locating people and assets.
Quick answer: can you find out who owns a car from the number plate?
Yes. In Portugal, vehicle ownership is recorded in a register, and the registered owner can be identified from the number plate. What complicates most cases is the next step: the name on the register is not always that of the person driving the car, and knowing a name is not the same as knowing where the person or the vehicle is. Our job is to give you the complete answer: who the owner is, who uses the car and where it can be found, whenever there is a legitimate reason to know.
When it makes sense to identify a car's owner
1. You sold the car and it is still in your name
This is one of the most common situations. The buyer never updated the registration and, years later, you keep receiving fines, tolls and taxes for a car that is no longer yours. To resolve it, the person who kept the vehicle has to be located.
2. There is an abandoned vehicle on your property
A car left in a garage, on a plot of land or in a private parking space cannot simply be removed by you. Identifying and contacting the owner is the first step towards resolving the situation the right way.
3. Your car was damaged and the driver fled
After reporting the incident to the authorities and to your insurer, you may need to gather more information: who was driving, where the vehicle is, whether there are witnesses. This work complements that of the authorities and never replaces it.
4. You are buying a used car from a private seller
Confirming that the seller really is the owner, and that there are no charges on the vehicle, prevents scams that are only discovered after the money has changed hands.
5. You are owed money
Knowing which vehicles the debtor has in their name, and where they are, can be decisive for your lawyer or for the enforcement agent. This falls under asset investigation and asset tracing.
6. A company vehicle has not been returned
Company, rental or leased vehicles that are not returned, and whose user stops responding, are a frequent request from businesses.
Why knowing the name is often not enough
The car was sold without the registration being updated. The name on record is the former owner's, who may not know where the vehicle is.
It is registered to a company or a leasing firm. You need to find out who uses it day to day.
The driver is not the owner. Relatives, employees and third parties use vehicles that are not theirs.
The address is out of date. The person has moved and no longer receives mail there.
The number plate is foreign. The information depends on the country of registration and requires other enquiries.
These are the cases where an investigation makes the difference between having a name on paper and having the problem solved.
What we do for you
Identification of the registered owner and of any charges on the vehicle.
Confirmation of who uses the vehicle, through observation in public places.
Locating the person or the vehicle, when the register is not enough.
Written report, which you can give to your lawyer, your insurer or the enforcement agent.
We do not guarantee legal outcomes: how the information is used is up to you and your lawyer.
The limits: only with a legitimate reason
A number plate leads to a person, which is why we handle these requests with care. We always ask you to explain the reason, and we only go ahead when it is legitimate: an accident, a debt, a sale that needs to be regularised, an abandoned vehicle, ongoing proceedings. We do not accept requests to watch former partners, confront another driver or follow someone out of curiosity.
Nor do we place GPS trackers on other people's vehicles. If you suspect that it is your car that is being followed, see how to detect a GPS tracker on your car.
How we handle these cases
The work begins with a free, confidential initial assessment, in which you explain the situation and what you need to know. We then present a fixed quote with no hidden costs. Find out more about how much a private investigator costs in Portugal. To organise on-the-ground enquiries we generally need 24 hours' notice. All investigations are coordinated by detective Alexandre Ribeiro, member of WAD (no. 1687), APDPE (no. 1326), LIDEPPE (member no. 33) and IKD.
Frequently asked questions about car owners and number plates
Can you find out who owns a car from the number plate?
Yes. In Portugal vehicle ownership is recorded in a register, and the registered owner can be identified from the number plate. We handle that identification and, when necessary, confirm who actually uses the vehicle and where it can be found.
Is the registered owner always the person driving the car?
No. The vehicle is often registered to a company, a leasing firm, a relative or a former owner who sold it without the registration being updated. In these cases, the name on the register is not enough to solve the problem.
I sold my car and it is still in my name. Can you help?
Yes. We locate the buyer and document who has the vehicle, so that you can regularise the situation with the help of the registry services or a lawyer.
Can you get the owner's address?
When there is a legitimate reason, such as an accident, a debt or court proceedings, we can locate the person. We do not accept requests without a justification.
What if the number plate is foreign?
It is more complex and depends on the country of registration. We assess each case before giving a quote, and we tell you honestly when it is not possible.
Someone hit my car and drove off. What should I do?
First, report the incident to the authorities and to your insurer, with the number plate and the time. If you then need to gather more information, such as witnesses or the vehicle's whereabouts, we can help.
